Converting an Offshore Supply Vessel into a Cable Repair Powerhouse
Allswater is currently undertaking a unique and complex project—converting a versatile offshore supply vessel into a specialized cable repair ship designed for North American waters.
This transformation will fill a much-needed role in offshore cable repair for both the energy and telecommunications sectors, where mid-sized vessels with this level of capability are hard to come by.
The project began two years ago when our client realized the need for a midsize cable repair ship with all the functions of a much larger ship. The client was inspired by similar vessels and recognized an opportunity to create a purpose-built ship for the North American market. Allswater was brought in to move the idea from concept to reality, leading the design and preliminary engineering stages and preparing the project for shipyard construction. Vard Brattvaag Shipyard in Norway was selected to carry out the conversion, and the IT Infinity is now taking shape as a fully specialized cable repair vessel.
Specialized Features of the IT Infinity
Every aspect of the IT Infinity is being meticulously redesigned to meet the rigorous demands of offshore cable repair operations. The vessel will feature two spacious structural tanks capable of carrying both power and data cables, along with specialized equipment including a remote-operated vehicle (ROV) for underwater inspections and a plow for securely burying cables. These advanced capabilities are often reserved for much larger ships, but the IT Infinity’s mid-size design is a key advantage, combining versatility with exceptional maneuverability. Adding to its efficiency, the vessel is equipped with a reverse-lay system that enables damaged cables to be retrieved to the working deck for thorough inspection and repair. Once restored, the cables can be seamlessly redeployed from a dedicated operations area at the stern, ensuring a streamlined and highly effective repair process.
Expanded Crew Capacity and Modifications
For its new role, the IT Infinity is also being significantly modified with additional features, including a shelter deck, working deck, and expanded living quarters. These changes allow the vessel to accommodate up to 60 persons—double its original capacity. The additional accommodation allows for safe efficient around-the-clock cable repair and maintenance.
By understanding our clients’ requirements and then creating a set of Classification Approved design documents, Allswater was able to support the shipyard’s technical and production capabilities. This collaboration ensured the delivery of a ship that not only meets rigorous operational standards but also addresses a critical gap in the North American offshore cable market.
Stay tuned for more updates as we move closer to delivering this unique addition to North America’s offshore fleet.
