Electrifying the Ship Hector and Blending History with Modern Innovation
At Allswater, we thrive on tackling challenges that combine maritime history with modern technology.
One of our most exciting projects is upgrading the Ship Hector, a replica of the vessel that brought the first Scottish settlers to Nova Scotia in 1773. Docked at Hector Heritage Quay, this historic ship is now getting a 21st-century update including an electric propulsion system.
Electrifying the Ship Hector isn’t just a standard upgrade. The electric propulsion system is being carefully integrated with the ship’s original 18th-century look and feel intact. The goal is to balance its historical charm with sustainable, efficient technology. The new motors will offer smoother and quieter sailing, making it ideal for tours and charters—and better for the environment.
We’re proud to be part of the team making the Ship Hector a contributor in the growing movement towards greener marine practices. The Ship Hector is set to become the largest fully rigged, electric-powered passenger vessel in Canada.
Along with the new motors, the project team are also refurbishing key parts of the ship, like the masts, rigging, and deck equipment, to ensure it’s safe and functional for years to come. The Ship Hector will continue to educate visitors about its historic past, while also showcasing how modern technology is shaping its future.
Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare to launch the newly electrified Ship Hector.
