Scallop Harvesting In The Harshest Maritime Climates

Allswater was asked to assess and improve a scallop-harvesting fleet with a new build or converted vessel. The vessel would operate at the southern tip of Argentina, an area known to be secluded, far from service centers, and having some of the harshest maritime climates.

  • Meet stringent financial considerations
  • Increase overall efficiency of scallop production
  • Reduce maintenance costs compared to existing vessel
  • Provide increased comfort for the crew
  • Provide a unique and large factory processing area

Allswater approached the challenge with strategic research, exploring multiple options, including new builds and converting an existing vessel. The project took an exciting turn when Allswater proposed a bold, “out of the box” solution: repurposing a small, redundant vessel already owned by the client.

Though the vessel was less than 10 years old, it had proven difficult for the client to sell due to its size and configuration. It lacked the factory area, electrical capacity, and fuel storage needed for an upgraded scallop vessel, making it seem like an unlikely candidate for conversion. However, Allswater saw potential where others saw limitations.

The innovative concept involved a drastic transformation—lengthening the vessel, creating a new factory processing area, adding crew accommodations, and completely revamping the electrical systems. After reviewing the concept, the client entrusted Allswater with the entire project, from developing the project plan and design package to managing class approvals and assisting in shipyard selection.

Allswater evaluated shipyard proposals and recommended that the conversion work be carried out at Astander Astilleros in Spain. The team continued to support the client with project management, document control, and ongoing engineering assistance throughout the conversion process.

After 11 months in the shipyard, the vessel emerged fully modernized and lengthened. In October 2014, it set sail for Argentina as the Capesante, ready to embark on a new chapter in its operational life.
