Applying LiDAR to Modernize Onboard Wastewater Systems

When the sewage treatment plant (STP) on a 600-passenger ferry neared the end of its lifespan, Allswater was tasked with planning the removal of the old system and the integration of a new unit with a completely different configuration.

  • The Existing system had reached the end of its serviceable lifespan. New system featured a different layout, requiring new connections for tanks, pumps, and electrical components.
  • Installation had to be precisely planned to ensure compatibility and regulatory approval.
  • Conducted a 3D scan of the existing STP, foundation, piping, and electrical connections while the vessel remained in service.
  • Created a detailed 3D model of the compartment to capture accurate measurements and identify potential interferences.
  • Produced 2D drawings from the model to guide contractors in executing the work.
  • Developed a comprehensive Statement of Work to ensure seamless installation and compliance with regulatory approvals.
  • Provided contractors with precise documentation to facilitate efficient installation.
  • Enabled Class approval through detailed engineering plans and a structured scope of work.
  • Work is scheduled for completion before the ferry’s first sailing in Spring 2025, ensuring minimal operational disruption.
