Inter Scotia – Construction and Delivery of a Hybrid Battery-powered Wellboat

Following the delivery of Inter Atlantic, Allswater continued working alongside Intership’s project team during the construction of Inter Scotia — a hybrid-powered live fish carrier built at Zamakona Yards.

The Allswater team were stationed permanently onsite, integrated directly with the owner’s team – overseeing the build team, delivering continuous inspection services, supporting harbour trials, and managing drawing approvals.

Inter Scotia builds on its sister vessel with a focus on advanced sustainability measures. The vessel measures:

  • 76 metres in length with a 17-metre beam
  • Cargo hold capacity of 2,500 cubic metres
  • MMC First Process fish handling systems and Frionordica RSW cooling

The ship’s hybrid propulsion system is a major step forward for live fish carriers. Key components include:

  • Three Yanmar diesel generators
  • ABB electric propulsion motors

The batteries are fully integrated with the vessel’s Power Management System, operating in Spinning Reserve and Peak Shaving modes. In Spinning Reserve mode, the batteries can immediately take over if a diesel generator fails, keeping critical systems online without interruption. In Peak Shaving mode, the batteries help absorb load spikes, allowing more efficient propulsion control and reducing the need to start standby generators. Together, these features help reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions, and improve operational flexibility during maneuvering and transit.

Freshwater treatment is also a major part of Inter Scotia’s design. Like her sister ship, Inter Scotia uses Intership’s advanced Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems for chemical-free treatment of sea lice and Amoebic Gill Disease (AGD). The system significantly reduces salmon mortality, minimizes fish stress, and eliminates the need for chemical treatments — delivering better results for fish welfare, environmental protection, and cost management.
