Building and Delivering the Inter Atlantic Live Fish Carrier

Allswater’s team was fully embedded within Intership’s project group throughout the construction of the Inter Atlantic, ensuring seamless collaboration and successful delivery of the live fish carrier at Zamakona Yards in Bilbao, Spain.
Supporting the build from keel laying to harbour trials, our onsite team oversaw the construction of the vessel, with additional support from our San Sabastian office. Our team conducted continuous inspections of steelwork, mechanical systems, piping and outfitting, assisted during harbour trials, and supported drawing approvals — working closing with the designer and as an extension of the Owner’s Operations team. Designed by NSK Ship Design, Inter Atlantic is a modern live fish carrier built with a strong focus on fish welfare, environmental protection, and operational efficiency. The 72.2-metre vessel features:
- Length: 72m with a 17m Beam
- Two large cargo holds totaling 2,200 cubic metres
- Fresh water production capacity of 5,000m³/day using Peter Taboada reverse osmosis systems
- MMC First Process loading, unloading, and circulation systems
- Frionordica refrigerated seawater (RSW) cooling
The freshwater systems onboard Inter Atlantic are a key part of its design. Intership’s Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology allows for efficient, chemical-free treatment of sea lice and Amoebic Gill Disease (AGD), helping to reduce salmon mortality rates and maintain fish health. Fish treated through this method experience very low stress and resume feeding immediately, offering benefits from both an environmental and operational perspective.
The vessel was built under DNV class notation for unrestricted trade under the Norwegian flag, designed to operate on both the Canadian east and west coasts, in Icelandic waters, and the Northeast Arctic.
