Lyra is a step forward in developing a zero-emissions, electric-powered workboat for East Coast operators.

Based on Allswater’s OPUS14 hull design, which underwent model testing during the ACOA Hull Efficiency Challenge, the project was launched in 2021 to explore what an electric alternative to diesel could look like in a commercial setting.
Challenge
Switching from traditional diesel-powered workboats to an electric model brought a few key challenges to the surface:
- Cost Considerations – Electric vessels come with a higher up-front cost, so the design needed to offer long-term value by reducing operating and maintenance costs over time.
- Performance & Efficiency – The vessel had to compete with diesel on power, reliability, and runtime, while still maximizing battery life and charging efficiency.
- Industry Adoption – The vessel was designed to maintain a familiar layout and operational workflow as traditional east coast workboats —while introducing the advantages of hybrid technology, including quieter operation, reduced emissions, and a significantly lower environmental footprint.
- Material Selection – The move to aluminum needed to be practical—not just for strength and durability, but also for ease of construction and sustainability.
Solution
Allswater applied its experience in ship design and marine engineering to tackle these challenges with a realistic, forward-looking approach:
- Hull Design – Our OPUS14 hullform was adapted for aluminum construction, further improving efficiency and stability.
- Powerful Propulsion – A 300kW motor delivered output required for commercial workboat operations without sacrificing energy efficiency.
- Long-Term Cost Advantage – When considering fuel and maintenance savings, the total cost of ownership was projected to match—or even beat—diesel boats over time.
- Adaptable Layout – The design left room for future upgrades in energy storage, onboard systems, and general configuration.
- Lighter, More Sustainable Build – Aluminum construction reduced weight and environmental impact, while offering 100% recyclability and strong performance on the water.
Results
The result was a practical, electric-powered workboat concept that respected industry norms while moving toward cleaner, quieter operation. Lyra shows what’s possible when modern marine engineering meets practical needs. It’s not just a concept—it’s a blueprint for the next generation of workboats.
