Modernizing Offshore Marine Operations

Challenge

A major component of Allswater’s contribution was the development of high-accuracy LiDAR scans and digital twins, forming the backbone of modern vessel monitoring, remote operations, and immersive VR/MR training environments.

Allswater partnered with Horizon Maritime on the Offshore Connected Worker Project, a $3.1M digital transformation initiative designed to modernize offshore operations through advanced scanning, data integration, and real-time crew support technologies. 

A major component of Allswater’s contribution was the development of high-accuracy LiDAR scans and digital twins, forming the backbone of modern vessel monitoring, remote operations, and immersive VR/MR training environments. 

Challenge 

Offshore work environments are demanding, high-risk, and geographically isolated. To improve safety, operational awareness, and the efficiency of offshore crews, the project required: 

• Precise vessel geometry for digital twin development 

• Real-time vessel and crew data integration 

• Reliable network and communications infrastructure with a robust cyber security solution 

• A platform for VR/MR-based operations support 

• A single, cohesive digital ecosystem that crews and shore-based operators could both use and trust 

Solution & Results

High-Accuracy LiDAR Scanning & Digital Twins 

We completed extensive LiDAR scans of key vessel areas to capture accurate as-built geometry. These scans enabled the project team to: 

• Create detailed models and digital twins 

• Crew Training with enhanced situational understanding of the vessel and engine room 

• Prove a significant reduction in installation errors and project downtime 

Integrated Digital & Operational Systems 

The project team developed and demonstrated a complete digital technology suite, including: 

• Vessel real-time data interface via a real-time monitoring platform 

• Satellite communications systems 

• Wi-Fi & onboard network installation with a cyber security platform 

• Energy and emissions monitoring 

• Crew health & wellness monitoring 

• Remote operations support using VR/MR technologies 

Collaborative Engineering & Implementation 

Working alongside innovation partners from the Ocean Supercluster program, Allswater, along with partners VMG Strategic Technology, and Rimot.io, ensured all systems met operational, regulatory, and environmental standards—while enabling future scalability for additional vessels and offshore platforms.
