Saputi II: Progress Update on Qikiqtaaluk Fisheries’ New Arctic Trawler

Work continues to move steadily ahead on the Saputi II, the newest addition to Qikiqtaaluk Fisheries Corporation’s (QFC) fleet.
Built for Arctic conditions and some of the world’s toughest fishing grounds, this next-generation freezer trawler is taking shape at Freire Shipyard in Vigo, Spain — and Allswater has been proud to support the project from the very beginning.
A Modern Vessel for Arctic Waters
At just over 79 metres in length, the Saputi II is designed for single and twin trawl operations, targeting key species of shrimp and Greenland halibut (turbot). The ship is purpose-built for the East and West Coasts of Canada, the Coast of Labrador, Iceland, and the Northeast Arctic — areas where ice-class capabilities and rugged efficiency are a must.
She’s built to meet Canadian Flag State regulations and will sail under the strict standards of Det Norske Veritas (DNV), including Clean and ICE1A* notations.
Some of her technical highlights include:
- Wärtsilä diesel engine with CPP propeller and fixed nozzle
- Ibercisa deck machinery
- Ammonia refrigeration systems by Johnson Controls
- Carsoe dual-species seafood processing plant onboard
- Upper and Lower Cargo holds for processed, market ready products
Our Role: Full Project Management
Allswater’s involvement in this project extends well beyond standard inspections or technical support. We’ve taken the lead on overall project management — from reviewing initial specifications and designs, to advising on shipyard selection, supporting contract negotiations, and overseeing the build through each major phase.
Not all owners have the internal capacity of technical teams equipped to handle large-scale construction projects like this. That’s where Allswater comes in — filling that gap to manage every detail through to delivery. We’ll continue with Saputi II right through harbor trials, sea trials, final handover and fishing trials.
